Shepherd’s Clinic is a community-based medical clinic that serves the medically under-served of northern Baltimore City. The clinic provides on-site primary care based principally on corporate, community and private donations. Specialty, surgical and consultation services are provided for Shepherd’s clients free of charge by MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Hope Director Dr. Wayne Campbell identified a need at Shepherd’s Clinic.
Dr. Campbell recognized one of the most fundamental and important needs of primary care is provision of vaccines. Dr. Campbell discovered the pharmaceutical company Merck Inc. has a generous program of providing many of the vaccines they manufacture free to those who cannot afford medical care. The initiation of the program required the initial purchase of a modicum of vaccine doses. Hope Returned made the donation that enabled the clinic to purchase initial quantities of vaccine for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. For as long as Merck sponsors this program (we hope it is a long time!), subsequent doses of these vaccines will be provided free of charge to Shepherd’s patients.
Hope Returned is pleased to be able to partner in this effort with the outstanding staff and volunteers of Shepherd’s Clinic, whose mission is providing health care to the under-served, and with Merck Inc., whose corporate generosity created the program that ultimately made the vaccinations possible. We encourage all of those who participate with hope in charitable community support to search and find the providers of free medical care in your community and lend your services. Well done, Dr. Campbell!
